VA BIRDers,
Ah. SPRING! And all those great birds becoming active, looking for nest
sites, and singing away. I, and the readers of VA BIRDs, have read your
amazing notes and stories about hawks building nests, Cooper's Hawk pairing
up, woodcocks displaying, owls hooting up a storm, phoebes, wrens,
thrashers. and it gets us all itching to see those wonderful things. Truly,
spring is a great season!
But, why stop with a single story? By adding those great sightings to
Virginia's Breeding Bird Atlas your observations will live forever - and
future researchers will read and use those notes. Moreover, your help is
even more important, too. The Atlas is in its last year and it's a trying
year with the Corona Virus. Travel is becoming difficult, parks are closing
and, well, people are getting a bit reticent about going out. This means the
backyard and nature garden birders can substantially fill a void! Your
records will help fill holes in the Atlas, especially for those areas that
are seldom visited.
How can you help? By adding your sightings to the Ebird Atlas site:
https://ebird.org/atlasva/home It's easy to enter. But, suppose you don't
want to deal with Ebird? No problem! The Atlas has a special site where
you can send me (or your local coordinator) the sighting with date and
location and we can load it up for you. And, if you are concerned about
private property, we can easily adjust the location away from that sensitive
area.

the other regional coordinators and we will be pleased to help. Also, and
more importantly, load up your sighting to the Atlas or send us a note so we
can add your valuable contribution.
