VA Birders,
This morning, as I counted birds for Cornell's Project Feeder Watch, the small
male Sharp-shinned that had been gone for awhile, suddenly reappeared. He
swooped in to the feeders, scattering the few goldfinches, chickadees, and
titmice. Having no luck he flew to a perch in a large shrub about 25 yards away.
The chickadees and goldfinches were back within minutes. They had just begun to
feed, when the Sharpie made another attempt. He came in from behind and to the
left side of the feeder forcing a goldfinch to fly toward the window, where I
was watching. The goldfinch managed to turn away from the glass at the last
second going off to the right with the hawk in hot pursuit. As the Sharpie
turned to bank away from the house he was inches from the window, giving me a
short, but great look from only inches away. I wasn't able to tell if he caught
his breakfast, but it was an interesting way to add another species to my count.
Enjoy the birds,
