The nighthawk show at Tysons got off to slower start last night. Initially
there were significantly fewer birds, though there were a lot of birds down
quite low near one side of the building. I attributed this to the strong
wind that was blowing most of the evening. By a little after 9:00, a lot
more birds seemed to show up. The traditionl location to look at the birds
is the parkng lot on the west side of the buildings. I always start there.
But, again last night, I walked around the building about 9:00, which was
worth doing. When I left, about 9:40, I stopped for a few minutes near the
building across Gallows Rd. that is labled "Handisoft."
From that location one can get a much larger sky viewing area, and last
night it was just covered with nighthawks. You get less detail from there,
but a better prospective. A suvey of some other state birdlines indicates
there are lots of nighhawks on the move just now. I'll be there again
tonight.
