VA Birders,
On Wednesday, Nov. 10, I went over to Fort C.F. Smith Park here in
Arlington Co. about 11:00 am. As I got out of my car, a blackbird flew into
the
tree in front of me. I was trying to figure out what kind of blackbird it was
when a second bird flew in and joined it. The second bird had some rusty
markings on its back and a light (yellow) eye. I quickly realized they were a
pair
of Rusty Blackbirds, which I believe are a new species for the park. They are
also the first Rusty Blackbirds I have seen in Arlington in many years.
Unfortunately, they flew off almost as soon as I had identified them, and I did
not see them again.
I have also been checking the feeders in the park, which are located
behind the Hendry (main) house for winter finches. I have not found any Purple
Finches or Pine Siskins there yet, even tho I have had Purple Finches at my
feeders, which are only 3 or 4 miles west of the park, off and on for the last
several days.
