VA Birders,
To my delight, I found the hawk again today on my drive in to the
refuge at about 10:45 AM. It was hunting in the field to the left, but
a short while later I saw it, as yesterday, in the vicinity of the
pond behind the parking lot. It swept across the fields, hovered,
perched, and then dropped to the ground from a tree where it captured
prey and then ate it. I saw it three more times as I slowly drove the
"wildlife drive, " once flying low almost directly over my car. The car
makes a good blind, and I got much better pictures today, using my
Annie Oakley approach to bird photography. (Thanks, Harry.)
This is one magnificent bird, and I think chances may be good that
visitors to the refuge tomorrow may see it.
