After reading all of the reports this week about the good winter birds in PW
county, I had to go and take a look. Fortunately, most of the good birds were
still around. So were the good birders - I ran into Laura Catterton, Kurt
Gaskill and Linda Millington, who helped me find a few of the goodies I was
looking for (thanks!).
Nokesville - Parkgate Rd:
Snow Bunting - 1
Chestnut-collared Longspur - 1 (I think Kurt and Linda found a 2nd bird too)
White-crowned Sparrows
Savannah Sparrow
Lots of raptors: adult Bald Eagle, Merlin, Kestrels, Harriers, Red-tailed Hawk,
Red-shouldered Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Black Vultures
At the church/dairy farm I didn't find any Brewer's Blackbirds, but there were
Bluebirds, a Meadowlark, Killdeer and a Harrier.
I then went with Laura to North Fork Wetlands to look for the Rough-legged
Hawks (I didn't see any in Nokesville). We lucked out, getting some great looks
at a light-morph juvenile perched, flying and hovering. Also at the wetlands
were another adult Bald Eagle, several Harriers and some Red-tailed Hawks.
