I spent an hour or so walking around the wetland along Riverside Parkway in
Loudoun County this morning. It looks like a promising spot but I don't know if
anyone birds there. Highlight this morning were:
Lesser(?) Yellowlegs - 1
Solitary Sandpipers - 2
Snipe - 15
Killdeer - at least one heard
Savannah Sparrows - 20, one or two singing
Osprey - flyover
Red-breasted Merganser - flyover
Eastern Meadowlarks - several singing
DC Cormorant - swimming in the creek
Tree Swallows - many
Bluebirds - a pair who seemed to be competing with the Tree Swallows for rights
over a nesting box
Barn Swallow - 1
BG Gnatcatcher - heard along the creek
Wood Ducks - heard along the creek
To get there: Heading west on Rte 7, go past Rte 28 and make a right onto
George Washington Blvd. Turn right onto Riverside Pkwy. Take that near the end
of the road and park in the lot next to the tot lot.
