of what is being seen at either of these locations...
My wife (Sue) and I went to Riverbend Park on March 10. We walked about
three quarters of a mile upstream from the visitors center. We saw:
American Crow
Carolina Chickadee
Carolina Wren
Dark-eyed Junco
Downy Woodpecker
Eastern Phoebe
Great Blue Heron (3-4)
Mallard
Pileated Woodpecker (flew into a hole in a Sycamore tree)
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Tufted Titmouse
Turkey Vulture
White-breasted Nuthatch
Common Mergansers (18 - 9 male, 9 female)
Wood Duck (7 - 5 male, 2 female)
Ring-necked Duck (5)
Scaup sp. (2)
Ring-billed Gull (lots)
DC Cormorant (1)
Bufflehead (6 - 3 male, 3 female)
Am. Black Duck (3)
Juvenile Tundra Swan (1)
Hooded Merganser (1 male)
My wife and I went on our first visit to Occoquan NWR on Sunday, March
11. We were inspired by the posting by Marc Ribaudo on 3/10 of the 65
species! We got to the refuge at about 1030am and walked about 4.5
miles (left at about 3pm). We just saw about 30 species, but we very
much enjoyed the visit to the refuge. We saw:
American Crow
Canada Goose
Carolina Chickadee
Carolina Wren
Common Grackle
Dark-eyed Junco
Downy Woodpecker
Great Blue Heron (flew off after catching a very large fish)
Northern Cardinal
Northern Mockingbird
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Red-tailed Hawk
Red-winged Blackbird (at least a dozen)
Song Sparrow
Tree Swallow (6-8)
Turkey Vulture
White-throated Sparrow
Immature Bald Eagle
Osprey (at least 4 pair)
Northern Harrier
Lesser Scaup (hundreds)
Pied-billed Grebe
Common Goldeneye (several at least 2 males and 1 female)
Hooded Merganser (a few)
Red-breasted Merganser (at least a dozen)
Bufflehead (half dozen or so)
Ruddy Duck (1)
Herring Gull (a few)
Ring-billed Gull (many)
Greater Black-backed Gull
