Having not heard of any Tuesday sightings of the Rufous, I felt it was
important to go and look for her again today (or, as I told a coworker,
"I'm going to freeze my butt off for science!" "Why?" " 'Cause it's
fun!!"). I deliberately waited until after the "lunch rush" so I could
watch when others might not be. I was indeed alone. I arrived at 1:35 and
didn't see her. I started scanning with my binoculars, and...bingo! There
she was, perched in the deciduous Viburnum bush behind the feeder, a little
round ball of fluffed feathers with a beak poking out. Seeing her was good
news on two counts: first, of course, is knowing that she has not yet left
us; second, it meant I wouldn't have to stay out in the cold the entire
hour, watching for her.<g> I observed her for 10 minutes; she went to the
feeder once during this time. I then took a turn around the garden, on the
lookout for other birds of interest (there were none, not even of the
"junk" variety). When I went past the feeding station one last time at
1:50, she had left her perch in the Viburnum, and I didn't see her again
after that.
