Hi all!
Here is a brief update on bird sightings around the Richmond area:
On Saturday morning, there were approx. 8 Rusty Blackbirds at the
Wetlands part of James River Park. From the parking area,
go to the opening at the field and turn right. They were in the far
corner straight ahead... first foraging in the wet area on the ground and
then up in the trees doing their distinctive calls and songs.
As noted by others, Blue-Gr. Gnatcatchers have arrived and are
"everywhere". Lousiana Waterthrushes are scattered around (based on
others reports), but none were heard or seen in the Wetlands or Pony
Pasture on Saturday. Yellow-throated Warblers are in good numbers at most
parks.
Henricus / Dutch Gap Park: Two male Blue-winged Teal have been observed
in the rookery wetlands of Henricus Park. Snipe are still along the
drive. And, an early Common Yellowthroat was heard and seen along the
entrance road. If you hear cannon blasts, be aware that there is a
program underway to "discourage" the Black Vultures from hanging around
the boat launch area. Various techniques are being tried to keep the
vultures away without extensive trapping & killing. A butterfly note:
Falcate Orangetips & Spring Azures were around the Dutch Gap Conservation
area recently.
A Great Horned Owl was observed in James River Park. It was located in a
tree north of the road in the first small meadow
between the 42nd Street stairs and the visitor's center.
I also received a report of a 2 Black & White Warblers and 2 Louisiana
Waterthrushes at Pocahontas State Park on Saturday.
