At its annual picnic on Wednesday evening the Delaware Ornithological
Society announced the final results and tally from this year's 1st
Annual Bird-A-Thon. A total of $27,619 was raised, far exceeding the
goal of $15,000! Support came from 11 states! (The DOS is a birding
club serving Delaware and peninslar Maryland & Virginia.)
A piece of property along the Delaware Bay benefiting vital shorebird
habitat is currently under contract and will go to closing in July,
just in time for the southern shorebird migration. This purchase was
made possible by the funds raised through this Bird-A-Thon.
I'm also pleased that our team won the prize for the "Most Funds
Raised + Most Species Identified." We raised $3,100 and identified
115 species. Sharon Lynn, now of Rehoboth Beach, but recently of
Alexandria, VA, was our team captain. Bill Young and I from Virginia
and Sandy Spence and Richard Faull from Delaware made up the rest of
the team.
So, once again I sincerely thank all who contributed to this
important effort to preserve habitat for shorebirds, particularly the
Red Knot.
