I stopped at Lake Audubon in Reston 'for a minute' today to check out the
very active SWALLOWS. While there, I also had a handful of other things,
including PIED-BILLED GREBE, CANADA GOOSE, EASTERN PHOEBE (flitting around at
close
range between parking lot and water), RED-WINGED BB and COMMON GRACKLES.
I welcome input, however, on a very strange goose. The best I could come up
with was a Barnacle/Canada cross. It was about the same size as Canadas on
the water, smallish bill compared to Canada, head smaller than a Canada but not
quite as small as Barnacles I've seen, with white cheeks, black crown and
neck, Canada-brown breast and back, and sides mottled white/Canada-brown. It
was
still paddling leisurely around when I left about 1pm, visible thru binos but
scope recommended in case it swims down too far.
Directions: ADC Northern Virginia map 6-F8. There's a small parking lot off
Twin Branches Road in Reston, immediately south of the South Lakes Village
Shopping Center.
