I've gotten a few questions as to the location of the Sunrise Valley Park or
"Arboretum" as it is apparently sometimes called. Instead of giving my own
confusing directions for accessing the park I would refer people to the
Northern Virginia ADC map (map #5) and the following websites:
http://www.restonpaths.com/SunriseValley/
http://www.restonpaths.com/SunriseValley/Generalinfo.htm
I have never had a problem leaving my car in the Landmark Arboretum 1
building parking lot which is located on the north side of Sunrise Valley
Drive just east of its intersection with Monroe Street. I'm sure there are
also directions in either the old or new Va-bird archives.
I just went back to the park with my dad, camera, and scope. The bird was
still present and allowed for decent photo opportunities. At times the bird
left the main pond and flew to the small cove-like area seperated from the
main pond by vegetation. This area can be easily viewed by walking around
the trail until you are opposite the bridge over the main pond. When the
bird was here it was seen from within 20 or 30 feet (scope views were
amazing...). Hopefully it will stick around until at least tomorrow
morning.
Enjoy,
Alex
