I observed a small gull with red legs and a red dark tipped bill on a sand
bar in Lynhaven Inlet on Friday 2/25/05 from @ 16:45 - 17:40.
The bird had a dark gray ear patch and a dark gray spot above the eye.
When facing me the gray above the eyes met on top the head.
The gray on the back was similar to the color of Ring-billed gulls that
walked near this bird. The back end of the gull was black (wing tips &
tail?)
Other than these marking the gull was white. I saw the bird fly only once
and am fairly certain the gull had a black band on the tail tip. I had
the scope
zoomed in and only caught him as he landed. He basically jumped up and
came straight back down.
He stayed to himself and would walk away when other gulls came near. He
stayed in shallow water shuffling his feet (stirring up food?) and then
would move a few feet. There was excellent light and I have no doubt
about the red leg and bill color.
I don't have the street names with me. I was on the west side of Lynhaven
Inlet. Turned off Shore Drive at the light on the west side of the
bridge, took the 3rd left and parked on Dinwiddie Road and walked a short
distance on a sandy path. At low tide someone may have a chance of
relocating this gull.
