VA-Birders:
I'm going to be installing a mix of chickadee/titmouse/wren nest boxes on an
11-acre property in Oakton. The property has several buildings and a
parking lot, but is otherwise largely wooded - a good 40-50% is forested.
In several visits over the last two months, I've found it to have a healthy
population of the species listed (among a few other goodies such as
red-breasted nut and Lincoln's sparrow).
I'm trying to figure out how many to build. I would appreciate any
information that you could provide about the proper density/spacing of this
kind of nest box. Are there any general rules of thumb such as "no closer
than X feet from each other" or "no more than X per acre"?
What about location? Its my understanding that eye-level is appropriate for
these types of boxes. Does it matter what direction they face? Should they
be placed on a wooded edge, or back in from the edge?
Any personal knowledge/experience or on-line resources would be helpful.
Thanks in advance, please feel free to respond to me directly.
