As a resident of South Arlington, I was excited to see the recent report
about the Snowy and the photo. Of course, I would have liked an
approximation of its location more than just "South Arlington"... But I got
to musing about recent years' sightings of Snowies in Arlington and at
National Airport. And thus my question -- does anyone know whether birders
have scouted Arlington National Cemetery for Snowy Owls? Obviously it is
located not far from other sightings, and it seems like it could be
plausible winter habitat. Please reply to me directly unless you think it
might be of interest to the general list.
On a current birding note today I heard an unfamiliar musical call and was
stunned when I tracked it to a Carolina Chickadee. I would have thought
that after many years I know all the sounds a Chickadee will make, but this
bird proved me wrong! The bird was in the Shirlington area.
