I had a purple finch at the feeder this morning (a Project Feederwatch count
day). It looked like a female, except that it had a creamy-orangish rump.
I'm guessing that this means it was a first-year male, although Sibley
doesn't mention this. I'd be curious if anyone knows if this diagnostic of
a first-year male.
