Sixteen people joined me for a rainy Northern Virginia Bird Club sponsored
walk along the Hike-Bike Trail at Huntley Meadows today. The highlight was
the 22 Purple Finches seen in the Woodcock Meadow. Seemed to be evenly
divided between male and female. The Pond Trail was fairly active at the
beginning with lots of Ovenbirds and Yellow-rumped Warblers present, plus
several Blue-headed Vireos, Black-and White Warblers, and Northern Parulas,
and a Red-eyed Vireo making an appearance. Kurt also noted a vocalizing
Broad-winged Hawk along the Pond Trail. The water control structure hosted
four Palm Warblers. A male bluebird contested ownership of a nest box with
a Tree Swallow near the maintenance building. A pair of Ring-necked Ducks
remains in the central wetland. We observed a Spotted Sandpiper near the
platform overlooking the central wetland.
