Cliff, this was very helpful, as it confirmed
that the bird I've seen several times lately is a
Peregrine. I didn't realize they would be found
in open farmland like this--though I'm just ten
minutes from the mountains--so I wasn't looking
for them in my books. But this one seems pretty
fearless and hangs around in the big holly trees.
About ten days ago I was sitting on the porch
when he landed on the grass and stared at me for
several seconds before flying into the boxwoods.
I got a really good look, but then checked the
books and thought he might be a sharp-shinned
hawk, as that was the closest thing I could find.
Never thought to check the peregrine. On Sunday
he was out on the ground under the feeder for a
long time. By then I had decided he might be a
peregrine, and your pictures have confirmed that.
Thank you.
