The first joint VSO (Virginia Society of Ornithology) and CCB (Center for
Conservation Biology) field trip to Piney Grove, site of nesting
red-cockaded woodpeckers, took place on June 2. The land owned by the Nature
Conservancy is located near Wakefield and is not normally open to the public
so this was a real treat to not only have access but to have researcher,
Mike Wilson, from the CCB as our guide. We visited 4 cluster sites and
totaled 10 adult RCWs. In addition, we viewed two recently hatched young
with the aid of a telescoping camera that Mike raised and inserted into the
cavity. The total species for the morning was 43. If anyone wants that list,
they can email me directly at gramby@xxxxxxxxxx.
