Greetings VAbirders!
Late last night, after 2 days without power, the lights went back on here
in our little piece of Vienna. BIG THANKS to the power crews from Mt.
Airy, NC, who wrangled with the mess of power lines and fallen trees that
is our neighborhood and somehow got us humming again.
Being campers we survived pretty nicely with our trusty camping stove,
etc., and enjoyed camping WITHOUT mosquitos eating us alive, for a
change. We had a number of good birdees blow in and out of our trees over
the course of the storm, riding the wild wind. Identifying them as they
blew by was at times frantic and frustrating! My shorebird/seabird loving
son Gabriel kept hoping for a pelagic to show up, but our storm-tossed
waifs were mostly warblers and vireos. The gem of the bunch was a new
yardbird for us and a new lifebird for Gabriel, Cape May Warbler. I had
only recently gotten my life Cape May at Thompson WMA, so I was pleased
Gabriel got one here at home.
Hope everyone is safe and on the mend. Now back to cleaning up Izzy's
handiwork!
