Hello all,
It was a delightful morning for a walk at Occoquan NWR.
One of the highlights of the day was the RED-HEADED WOODPECKER that flew by
right after we got out of the car at the main parking lot!
Highlights included:
EASTERN PHOEBES
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS (eight or more young ones)
PALM WARBLERS (at least six of them)
FIELD SPARROW
BALD EAGLE (juv.)
and our first YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS (at least three) for the year.
In addition to the bird life, we spotted at least 10 species of butterflies:
Question Mark, Comma, Mourning Cloak, Monarch, Viceroy, Red Admiral, Common
Buckeye, Pearl Crescent, and Orange and Cloudless Sulphurs.
Jay, Carol, and Leslie (our daughter) Hadlock
Herndon, VA
P.S. We saw a sign noting the refuge has been open seven days a week since July
