I spent a few hours at Occoquan Bay NWR this morning, and saw 65 species.
Ospreys were perched on most of the platforms and several males were
displaying, making quite a racket. There was a nice mix of waterfowl, with 18
species, including 6 goldeneye on the river and 2 male red-breasted mergansers
in the fishing pond (past the banding station). A phoebe was hanging around
the banding station, and fox sparrows were singing along Bayview Rd. Five
meadowlarks were covorting in the field near the fishing pond. Flickers are
obviously moving. A single tree near the pond held 19, with many more rising
out of the field as I walked along the road. For those interested, here is the
