We opened our banding station for Northern Saw-whet Owls near Bergton,
Rockingham County, this past Monday, 31 October. We had a reasonable
total of 34 owls for the first week, considering that the migration has
been at least a week late at stations north of us. The nightly totals
were:
31 October 2 Northern Saw-whets banded; one Little Brown bat caught
1 Nov 3000 leaves captured in the nets (none banded); no owls
2 Nov 18 NSWOs
3 Nov 10 NSWOs
4 Nov 4 NSWOs
We have re-trapped one of the owls banded on 31 October two more
times this week. Last night she had increased in weight by 5 gm
which means that she found something to eat in the area which is
always encouraging to me. One of the other re-traps had also gained
weight during the week.
The little front that moved through on Tuesday may have brought the
Wednesday and Thursday owls. We may need to see another front move
through before the next group.
