VA Birders,
This evening there were some interesting birds in my small yard stream. First
a female Baltimore Oriole came in to bathe. She was followed by a Blackpoll in
fall plumage. A few minutes after the Blackpoll a Yellow-throated Warbler came
in to feed in the branches a couple of feet above the stream. Next an adult
female Cerulean Warbler came to the water. Just as the Cerulean finished
bathing and preening in a nearby shrub, a male Sharp-shinned came to land in
the cherry tree just over the stream. The small birds scattered - the Cerulean
among them. The Sharp-shinned didn't give chase. He sat observing for a few
minutes then went flapping off into the woods. Shortly after he left a pair of
Indigo Buntings came to drink and bathe. The male was still in breeding plumage.
I picked blueberries in the yard, between periods of scanning the sky with
binos to find some high flying Nighhawks. Finally two came over just above tree
top level heading North.
For looks at a couple of the Sharp-shinned photos, click below: Sorry but
didn't get good photos of the Cerulean.
