Greetings to all:
On Saturday evening 08/19/07 at 2015 hrs I spotted my first fall Common
Nighthawk as it flew overhead when I was on a high hill over looking the Dan
River in downtown South Boston on the southside of town. It flew around for
about 20 minutes before it departed to the west.
On Sunday morning while it was nice and cool, I made a trip to Staunton
River State Park and looked for shorebirds, terns and herons. Only saw a
few shorebirds with a large number of Killdeer, a lone Black-bellied Plover
and 5 Semi-palmated Plovers, along with a single Lesser Yellowleg, a few
Semi-palmated Sandpipers, Least Sandpipers and Sanderlings.
Large numbers of Indigo Buntings along with Goldfinches and Chipping
Sparrows were seen in the planting strips of Sorgam along with an Orchard
Oriole.
Three Bald Eagles were seen which were 2 immatures and 1 adult and 1 Osprey.
Latter on this evening I made a trip down to Runt Powell's farm to seen if
anything unusal was flying around and was rewarded with a single adult
Mississippi Kite.
Still no terns or unusal herons seen at Staunton River State Park for the
summer yet. In fact it was odd that there were only a few Great Egrets seen
and they were up the Dan River.
