VA-Birders,
Eight local birders tallied 47 species during today's morning walk (7:00-10:00)
at Newport News Park. The Hampton Roads Bird Club coordinates these walks, held
the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month throughout the year. Jane Frigo leads
them, and we meet in the parking lot behind the Ranger Station.
While somewhat slow in spots - and despite the humid and hazy conditions - we
had some treats throughout the morning:
- Two SUMMER TANAGER (1 adult male and 1 juvenile)
- A pair of RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS that landed close by on a power pole and
another pair across the reservoir
- Three BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCHES moving about in a pine tree
- An EASTERN KINGBIRD that landed close to us on one of the bridges
- A wire lined with PURPLE MARTIN, TREE SWALLOWS and N. ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS
- Several BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS and EASTERN BLUEBIRDS in different locations
- A lone PINE WARBLER (our only warbler of the day)
