A Mourning Dove pair nested on a ledge above my front door, right next to the
window above the door, so I can see everything. The nest is pretty sparse
because the twigs tend to slide off of the ledge. Yesterday an egg appeared.
This
morning I came down to see that the nest and egg had fallen off, landing in
an ivy plant I had placed underneath on the porch, just for that reason. I have
no idea how long it had been there. In any case, using gloves, my husband and
I placed everything back on the ledge, but the egg, although not completely
broken, was a little cracked. Immediately, the pair came back and mama is
sitting back on the egg, although she poked her beak inside the little hole in
the
egg.
Here are my questions? Will she continue to sit on that egg waiting for it to
hatch, which it won't do because it's damaged? Should I discard the egg the
first chance I get, or should I just leave well enough alone and let nature
takes its course? Is there any chance at all the egg could hatch? Don't
mourning
Doves usually lay two eggs? Finally, why on earth would the birds pick such an
unsuitable place to build a nest?
