Fourteen people put their faith in the forecast for a beautiful warm day and
turned up for the NVBC walk at Mason Neck State Park for a chilly (30),
windy, beginning of the day at 8:30. Two and a half hours later, it was 50
degrees, the wind had died down and it was indeed a beautiful day. There
were lots of water birds to look at, but the passerines were not as
cooperative as the weather. Highlights included 125 tundra swans near the
boat launch that exploded into spectacular noisy flight as an eagle flew
over. From the beach, a single Greater Scaup stood out in a nearby group
of Lesser Scaup. Bay View trail was pleasant and quiet and produced good
views of a couple of brown creepers and a smattering of other small birds.
The marsh at the end held some beautiful wood ducks as well as the usual
Canada geese and mallards.
