Hello. Long time no talk.=0D
=0D
In your advertisement for the NVBC walk at Huntley to look for Woodcocks,=
=0D
you use the phrase "Despite=0D
controlled burns of their preferred meadow, Woodcocks have been reported=
!".=0D
Forgive me but that makes it sound as if the controlled burn is detrimen=
tal=0D
to the Woodcock and its habitat. To the contrary. The burn is GOOD for
their=0D
preferred habitat of open, clear meadow adjacent to a forested habitat. =
We
all=0D
know they breed in these habitats which are disappearing in the immediat=
e
DC=0D
area. Old fields or open meadows are fast becoming a thing of the outlyi=
ng=0D
counties. Controlled burns along with meadow restoration (which includes
bush=0D
hogging, clearing of debris and monitoring for invasives plant species) =
are=0D
all important steps in the preservation of these habitats. Without this
type=0D
of management program, the meadows at Huntley would slowly disappear. Th=
ey
we=0D
would be known as "the Woods of Huntley" or some other descriptive name.=
