Greetings,
Jethro Runco called to tell me he found a Mottled Duck today near the
banding station at First Landing State Park, Virginia Beach. They are banding
in
the portion of the park that is south of Shore Drive. His directions and
comments follow.
From Jethro:
At First Landing S.P. (the Shore Drive entrance) From the visitor center
take the Cape Henry trail east ~1.2 miles to Kingfisher trail. Take Kingfisher
0.6 miles to Long Creek Trail. Turn left on LCT and go ~0.1 - 0.2 miles to an
intersection of White Hill Lake trail. At this spot is also the banding
station (you will see the tarps). Near the intersection is a small concrete
bridge with a wooden boardwalk over it. This is where the Mottled was seen. It
was
in the channel heading to White Hill Lake (to the east). It was in the
company of a hen Mallard.
It was the first time I have seen this bird all season. I have been there
almost everyday. Lots of Mallards in the area. I will obviously keep my eyes
open the next few weeks to see if this bird returns and try again to get a
picture of it.
It is a healthy hike to this spot. Roughly 2 miles one way. Beautiful spot,
however.
