At Dave Boltz' suggestion, I went to look for nighthawks at the U.S Air
Force Memorial tonight. I easily found about six birds and had some
excellent views. I then went on down to the Capitol again, where I saw
fewer birds and not as good views. For those who are not familiar with the
Air Force Memorial, it is in Arlington, at the bottom end of Columbia Pike,
just above the Pentagon. You can't miss the three very tall stainless steel
spires curving up into the sky. The illumination of the spires attracts the
nighthawks. As a nighthawk place it has lots going for it. It is a public
memorial, so it is accessible. It is open every night until 11 p.m.,
always has the lights on, and has lots of free parking across the street.
It seemed to provide great views of the birds and also has a panoramic view
of the City of Washington that can't be beat. Thanks for the tip, Dave!!
