I'm only in town for one day, and so I spent part of it at Monticello. Got to
see black throated blue warblers, both male and female, an American redstart,
which landed right next to me, common yellowthroat, both male and female, an
ovenbird, a black and white warbler, male and female butter butts, a veery,
several wood thrushes, a Swainson's and a Gray cheeked. Given that all I saw in
Massachusetts was a couple of yellow warblers and three palm warblers, I was
very happy to have six species just in an hour or so, plus the thrushes! It was
great! And most of them were bathing in the stream, so that's always a plus. If
I had gone on the upper path where a homeowner has feeders, I bet I could have
seen a rose breasted grosbeak. but i didn't.
So glad there's going to be a ceremony there! Rod Simmons deserves all the
glory, and that park is in great part preserved and wonderful due to his
efforts. Too bad I'll be out of town for the ceremony, but I was really
grateful to have the chance to go there today.
