In October 2001, the Bureau of Land Management took ownership of 800
acres of the former Meadowood Farm, located on Mason Neck in Lorton Virginia.
Blm is currently developing alternatives for the management of the farm,
which has about two hundred acres of open land which was used for growing hay
and pastureland to support the horse boarding business of the farm. The
remainder of the farm is forested with hilly terrain. There are streams,
three ponds and some wetland acreage. BLM hopes to be able to open the area
to the public sometime in the fall of this year.
A number of birders are serving as volunteers counting birds on the
farm to assist BLM in gathering data on existing natural resources on
Meadowood. We
hold a count every Tuesday morning. If you would be interested in helping,
or would like information about the property, I would be happy to talk with
you (phone703 339-6671) or answer email questions ( cmcr8on@xxxxxxx). BLM
acquisition of Meadowood has increased public ownership on the Mason Neck
penninsula to 6300 of the approximately 9000 acres. The other public owners
are USFWS (Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge),the state of Virginia (Mason
Neck State Park and Gunston Hall Plantation) and the Fairfax County Regional
Park Authority (Pohick Bay Regional Park).

conducted since 1998 are listed below.
