Six birders joined the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia walk at
Meadowood Recreation Area near Lorton, VA, on this lovely and hot morning.
Is it still April?! We walked through the woods from the stable parking
area to the meadow, giving us multiple habitats.
Highlights were a singing Eastern Meadowlark atop a bit tree in the meadow,
a large group of Cedar Waxwings, several Blue Grosbeaks, a Scarlet Tanager,
and Wood Thrushes, 1 heard and 2 seen. First of Year for several of us were
Eastern Wood-Pewees and a Baltimore Oriole. Twenty-two Double-crested
Cormorants flew over in a V formation - not a usual on the Meadowood list.
We enjoyed a rest on the new bench near the pollinator garden honoring Jim
Waggener and the survey crew who have been collecting data on birds,
butterflies, plants and more at Meadowood and Occoquan Bay NWR for many
years. Thanks, Jim!
