What started this morning in the back yard with about 150 red winged
blackbirds and common grackles has grown to about 350. 70% red wing
blackbirds-30% grackles. There are just one female red wing and two brown
headed cowbirds. About 40% of the male redwings are juvenile. One of the
redwings is partially albino. The tail, undertail coverts-basically
everything from the back 1/3 body on back is white. It looks like it was
caught and dipped in a bucket of paint. It and the female red wing are two of
the most agressive birds in the flock. I spread about 7 lbs of mixed seed on
the ground this morning and thats where they are concentrating although they
are everywhere. There are about 60 in the same small tree as the red
shouldered hawk. They seem unconcerned. Can someone enlighten me about Red
Shouldered hawks? The small birds-even the crows seem to treat them almost
like they were'nt there. What do they know? Its snowing heavy now and
building up on their backs. The two Red Shouldered hawks copulated again
today. Its less than a 10 second process. That makes the copulation span from
at least Feb14th to today, .
