Fourteen members of the Northern Virginia Bird Club explored the far
southeastern section of the Manassas Battlefield in the general area of
the Portcini House and the Ball Family Cemetary this morning. Led by
Rich Rieger and me, the group found 48 bird species. A hoarse croaking
preceded the sight of a Common Raven flying directly overhead, followed
closely (being chased?) by an American Crow. We all had a fine
opportunity to compare overall size and tail shape of the two corvids.
A delightful surprise on our way back to the cars was a flock or 18
Wilson's Snipe that we flushed from a very wet meadow. Other highlights
were Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, one very
cooperative Hermit Thrush, Eastern Meadowlarks, plus 7 species of
sparrows. A few of these birds were picked up by Rich and me on the
Battleview Pkwy pond at the end of the morning.
