Today (5/9),after spending about an hour being amazed by the
American White Pelican sitting in the top of a tree near Halifax,
Adam D'Onofrio and I decided to make a run down to Greensville Co
(near Emporia)to look for kites. We were not disappointed as we
had spectacular looks at 10 different MISSISSIPPI KITES. Our first
kites were seen from the parking lot at the Citgo Gas Station near
the intersection of I-95 and S. Main Street in Emporia (I-95 Exit 8)
where we had stopped to empty our bladders. We were getting back in
the car when Adam calmly said " Hey Look, Kites" and indeed kites they
were, 2 of them. The other 8 kites were seen as follows: 2 along
Rt. 624 at the VA-NC border, 3 at the Meherrin River crossing on
Rt. 730 (Low Ground Road) at the Greensville/Southampton Co. line,
2 near the intersection of Rt 622 and 625 near Taylor's Mill Pond,
and 1 soaring above Taylor's Mill Pond (off Rt 622).
We also conducted a diligent search for Anhinga and Swallow-tail Kites but
neither was to be found...hey we're not complaining...We had a GREAT day!!
Good Birding,
Mike Boatwright, Amherst
Adam D'Onofrio, Dinwiddie Co.
