Like John Styrsky, I noted a good number of migrants this morning in
Lynchburg, in my case observing in my backyard in town. My observations
were:
Eastern Wood- Pewee - 1
Blue-headed Vireo - 1
Red-eyed Vireo - 2-3
Blue Jay - a passage flock of about 20
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - 1
Wood Thrush - 2
Northern Parula - 1
Yellow Warbler - 1-2
Chestnut-sided Warbler - 1
Black-throated Blue Warbler - 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 5+
Blackburnian Warbler - one female
Blackpoll Warbler 2-3+
Black-and-white Warbler 2
American Redstart 2+
Northern Waterthrush - 1
Scarlet Tanager - 1-2
Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 1
Orchard Oriole - 2
Baltimore Oriole - 3+
Also interesting was a pair of Wood Ducks that first landed in a White
Oak tree in the yard near the deck, then seemed to be checking out a
large Sycamore tree in the back ravine for possible nesting cavities.
The ravine only has water in it for short times after a rain; it is
really only a drainage ditch. The Northern Waterthrush was a new yard
bird, and afforded great looks as it sang from about 25 feet away.
