I conducted a local breeding bird count yesterday on one territory northwest of
Lynchburg north of US 501 to the James River and another at College Lake in
Lynchburg. Not nearly as many birds were singing yesterday as when I was out
scouting a week ago. I was shocked to find a female WOOD DUCK with seven
ducklings at College Lake. Sediment continues to fill this lake. I lived on the
lake for several years and hadn't seen Wood Ducks breeding there for awhile
plus the condition of the lake has worsened significantly since we moved from
there three years ago. I could only see one juvenile BALD EAGLE yesterday due
to vegetation obstructing my view of the nest and not wanting to get close
enough to disturb the parents. There were two juveniles there three weeks ago
when I helped band them. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of HAIRY
WOODPECKERS I found as some years I don't get any on the territory northwest of
town. I'm lucky to have well-monitored PURPLE MARTINS' nests in my territory so
I can include the number of nests, eggs and young. Five COMMON RAVENS were
observed at one location near the James River including one carrying food.
Someone told me about the KILLDEER's nest which is at the edge of a parking
lot. The complete list of species for each territory follows. I only spent an
hour and a half at College Lake late in the afternoon after finishing covering
the other territory so the number of species found there is less than usual.
