Since Monday the 4th's high catch of eleven Northern Saw-whet Owls in the
Lynchburg area that brought our total to 17 we have had a slower few weeks,
with a high catch of five on the evening of the 11th. Our total now stands
at 31 birds in 14 evenings and 79 hours of open nets at our site since
beginning October 26th. We have had no further foreign recaptures of
other's owls since one on November 4th that had been banded on October 29,
2001 on the Eastern Shore, although on Thursday the 14th we recaught a bird
that we had banded the previous Thursday, as well as one on Friday the 8th
that we had banded on Monday the 4th. With the leaf fall occurring, if owls
to the north have been lingering longer than normal as some banders
speculate, then we may see some better numbers this week, although we will
be suspending banding for a week Thanksgiving week, with more limited
efforts after that.
