The Lynchburg Bird Club conducted its 31st annual Breeding Bird Count on
Saturday June 5th, with a few territories being covered within a day or two
of this date. The count covers our Christmas Bird Count circle, which is
centered on Lynchburg College in town. Twenty-five individual participated,
down a little from an average of about 30, and our species total of 98 was
off a tad from our 31 year average of 100.4.
Best find was a singing and calling Yellow-bellied Flycatcher reported
earlier, found by Mike Boatwright along the James River in Amherst County at
the end of Salt Creek Road. This was the fourth county record and second
for the spring.
Rexanne Bruno found seven Cliff Swallows at Reusen's Dam on the James River
near the Bedford County line; this was the sixth record for the count.
And an American Woodcock was flushed at the end of a ravine near the James
River in Amherst County. The species was seen on the count yearly through
1990, but since then has been recorded on only three counts.
For the fifth year in a row a pair of Great Blue Herons is nesting at a
small pond in Amherst County.
No adult Bald Eagles were seen on the count, but two sightings of immatures
(possibly the same individual) were made. A pair of adults probably nested
successfully again on the James River near town.
The count of 44 Yellow-billed Cuckoos was the highest since 1988, although
we had 34 in 2000 and 27 in 2001.
Below is a complete list for the count.
