Greetings,
I got outside this morning before dawn on my property, hoping to hear a
Louisiana Waterthrush. I wasn't disappointed, as he finally did start to
sing.
I can say with confidence that this bird wasn't here yesterday, as I walked
my stream a couple times and had no signs of him. I also heard the
ventriloquial song of a Hermit Thrush, sounding much like two birds singing one
song.
Other singing birds included: Eastern Phoebe, with three others calling;
Field Sparrow and Eastern Towhee, which prefer my neighbor's meadow to my
trees;
many Robins; White-breasted Nuthatches, many; Chickadees and Titmice;
American Goldfinches; lots and lots of Juncos, a Song Sparrow, and a few
White-throated Sparrows. Pileated, Downy, Hairy, and Red-bellied Woodpeckers
were
heard, as was a Yellow-shafted Flicker. Haven't seen a Sapsucker in a month
in
my yard. A group of eight Great Blue Herons flew over the woods, quite
unusual for here. A Red-shoulderd Hawk cruised low over the trees, but I'm
still
unable to find this thing's nest. Several flocks of fifty or more Red-winged
Blackbirds were flying north. The Eastern Bluebird pair is busy at work
building a nest in a box. At least three Purple Finches persist at the
feeders.
