On Sat., May 11 approx. 50 people visited 12 different locations in Loudoun
County for International Migratory Bird Day.
We saw 142 species (5,252 individuals) of which the highlights were Am Bittern,
Am Black Duck (at this time of yr. a possible nester), Dunlin, Black-billed
Cuckoo, Whip-poor-will (a surprisingly uncommon bird in Lo Co), Olive-sided
Flycatcher, 6 Willow Flycatchers, 2 Least Flycatchers, 1 Blue-headed Vireo,
Common Raven, Bank Swallow, Gray-cheeked Thrush, a total of 30 warbler species,
including 15 (yes, 15!, most well-seen at the Blue Ridge Center) Blue-winged
Warblers, TN Warbler, Nashville Warbler, 2 Cape May Warblers, 2 Blackburnian, 8
Cerulean (most at the Blue Ridge Center, a couple w/excellent views), 3
Worm-eating Warblers, 4 Kentucky Warblers, and 25 Yellow-breasted Chat
(numerous in several locations), Vesper Sparrow, 2 Lincoln's Sparrows, 3 Swamp
Sparrows, both White-throated and White-crowned Sparrows, and only 1 Blue
Grosbeak,
The most int'g misses were Barn Owl, esp. since several of us know of an active
nest & freq. see them, Loggerhead Shrikes, which seem very sparse this yr. and
