At Algonkian Park yesterday morning I watched a Common Loon feeding in the
Potomac just 10-20 yards off the Virginia shore. It didn't seem to mind my
presence as I watched it for at least 15 minutes. Further out on the river I
noted multiple flocks of female Red-breasted Mergansers. In one closely-packed
flock I counted 16 birds; in another, over 30. In a wooded area on shore I saw
a mixed flock of maybe 70 Rusty Blackbirds and female Red-winged Blackbirds.
On the margin of the golf course I encountered a Palm Warbler and a
Prothonotary Warbler.
