My grad student and undergrad intern (Tom Kennedy and Jake Langeslag,
respectively) found a Loggerhead Shrike this morning (6/24) along the fence
row near the Arboretum nursery at Blandy Experimental Farm. This fence
line is visible looking east from the front entrance road just beyond a
garage that sits in the middle of the field.
The Common Moorhen that has been hanging out in Lake Arnold was still
present as of this morning This bird can be seen from the loop road. Lake
Arnold is the largest of several ephemeral ponds at Blandy and is located
less than a half mile beyond the visitor parking lot. The bird has been
hanging out in the pool beneath the large weeping willow. Also present in
the pool are a pair of Pied-billed Grebes and several immature Wood
Ducks. Other birds of interest seen at Blandy in the past week include
Yellow-breasted Chat and Blue Grosbeak, both seen from the Bridle Trail in
the successional fields in the southwest corner of the property. Willow
Flycatchers are calling from that same area. Grasshopper Sparrows can be
heard in several areas of the property.
