Bandy field list has surpassed 100 spp. Although my personal count is 98 I
know of at least 3 species seen by others that I have not seen.
This morning I had at a Lincoln's Sparrow.
Great study looks; able to directly compare to song sparrow. Basic first
impressions are of a slighter bird with neater more defined markings.
In profile the head is more subtle; somewhat contrasting, but not as bold as
Song. Buff malar particularly noticeable. Darker brown streaking on mantle
and upper breast is thinner and more defined than on Song.
Thin eye ring and fine streaking on auriculars and crown noted. A median
crown stripe was present but subtle; greyish color like supercillium. Dark
brown moustachial stripe contrasting with buff malar. Upper breast was
washed buff fading to off-white towards belly.
Upper breast was finely streaked brown. Extremely diffuse and narrow breast
spot present.
Bill was straighter, and more pointed than Song.
Behavior was a little nervous. Responded to pishing but preferred to stay in
cover. Watched for about 3-5 minutes unobstructed; first in tall grass with
birch saplings and then in a thicket. Both areas adjacent to each other and
relatively damp.
