Va birders
I got down there at 6:10 and pretty much stuck to the west end of the
Jersey barriers along the section of damaged road, where a tree offered
shade from the low sun. Around 7:30 a pair of Least Bitterns popped up and
perched on some grasses about 30 feet out, in vibrant high breeding
plummage; the male had reddish-orange at the base of the bill, and they
were both cute as hell.
I've got to figure they were right there the whole time. They didn't fly
in, and when they left the grasses they just glided 10 feet and
disappeared in the vegetation.
