Hello All,
I briefly birded Runnymede Park in Herndon and Lake Fairfax in Reston this
morning, with a quick stop at Fort Smith Park in Arlington this afternoon. I
don't think any of these will set any late dates, but their departure times are
at least getting close.
Runnymede had a GRAY CATBIRD. Also present were both Kinglets, several Song
Sparrows and a few Towhees.
The only thing of note at Lake Fairfax was the presence of 11 BAR-HEADED GEESE.
Does anyone know the status of these birds? I only counted 8 of them at any
time in the past, so they may be multiplying. They travel and associate with
the Canada Geese. I presume they have something to do with the nearby Reston
Zoo, but they certainly stray outside of that immediate area. I have seen them
flying over the Dulles Toll Road into the southern areas of Reston as well.
They are actually quite spectacular in their coloration, with a blue mantle,
black primaries, and white and black streaked necks and heads. Their voice is
peculiar - somewhat like a false note of a clarinet. Any info to satisfy my
curiosity would be greatly appreciated.
Fort Smith had 3 TREE SWALLOWS and two CHIMNEY SWIFTS flying over the area of
the bird stream.
