We also birded Accotink Bay WR Saturday morning, starting and ending at the
parking lot by the bathrooms (8:45 AM-11:15 AM). We went as far as the
Mound Trail, the big field, and the McCarty-Accotink Connector Trail.
In addition to Ben's and Bart's sightings reported, we add:
red-shouldered hawk 1
red-tailed hawk 1
Eastern screech-owl (flying out of pine forest, about 15 feet over our heads
in the big field, then back to the pine forest) 1
osprey in flight 2
wood ducks 10
bald eagle, mature, in flight 1
red-bellied woodpecker 3
hairy woodpecker 3
flicker 4
blue jay 10
hermit thrush 1
chipping sparrow 4
rusty blackbird 4
plus other usual suspects.
We also feel we saw 2 rough-legged hawks circling overhead for a
considerable period of time over the big field, and again over the parking
lot when we left. We would be interested in any comment off-line on this -
we got really good looks for a long period of time, but we note that
according to the "Checklist of Birds in the Fort Belvoir Area" this would be
near to impossible at this item of year.
